英国の愛国歌 1759年「Harlequin's Invasion」というパントマイムで初演された曲に、当時の人気俳優デイビッド・ギャリック（David Garrick）が作詞した。 詩中の「this wonderful year」は、作詞された1759年が7年戦争中の勝利が続いた年であったことによる。王国海軍によるラゴス（Lagos）とキベロン湾（Quiberon Bay）の勝利、英国陸軍によるミンデン（Minden）の勝利、ケベックの占領等などである。

Oakは日本では樫、楢の木に類する木であるが、大木となり木造帆船の建造に使用された。英国人にとって強靭さの象徴である。ちなみに花言葉は、hospitality(歓待), patriotism(愛国心)。日本語では「堅忍不抜」「剛毅」といったところか。

木造帆装軍艦時代、この曲のリズムで「戦闘配置につけ（Beat to quarters）」が叩かれた。 王国海軍では、当時からとても一般的な曲であり、数々の海洋冒険小説に出てくる。アレクサンダー･ケント著ボライソー･シリーズ第一作「栄光への航海（TO GLORY WE STEER）」は、この曲の歌詞の一部が題名であるし、ｐ.444、445ではボライソーが海戦に突入する艦尾甲板で海兵隊鼓手の少年に、「どうかな、＜ハーツ・オブ・オーク＞は？　それなら、みんな知っているだろう、え？　みんな」と横笛で吹くように言うシーンがある。 ローバート・チャロナー著「ツーロンの砲声」の冒頭にこの歌の一節が書かれている。またｐ.294にも社交館でこの歌が合唱されているシーンもある。 映画「美女ありき」ではトラファルガー海戦のシーンで使われている。

現代でも王国海軍の公式行進曲です。
